Put us all in a small, static room with the ability to grow and the power to destroy, and we’ll be occupied for hours. Agar.io, Slither.io, and the latest addition to the genre, Paper.io, have shown us that these basic compulsions make for quite engaging gameplay. However, while all its predecessors lacked something, Paper.io has dramatically improved upon the .io format and arguably made the best version yet.

To succeed in Paper.io, you must guide a constantly moving square to cover as much of the board as possible. You can only move up and down or left and right by swiping or tapping relative to its previous position. If someone crosses your path before you completely enclose an area, you die. If you cross your own path, you die. If you hit a wall, you die. That’s it. But something about these basic parameters makes for an addictive and engaging experience, and Paper.io has created an attractive design to make it even better.

Graphics:

The minimalist geometry of the drifting square felt like a retro, pixelated callback to the 1980s Turtle graphics, but the fresh, juicy color palette gives it a cheerfully updated look. The collectible pixel avatars are reminiscent of Crossy Road and feature charming little sprites like a rainbow-dragging unicorn, a mud-splattering pig, a fire truck, sushi, various fruits, and even seasonal options like a reindeer or a decorated tree. Unlike some other .io games, the overlapping colored territories look good as they grow, thanks to the clear palette choices. And if you don’t use an avatar but instead a random color from the generator, they’re always appealing rather than ugly, as has been the case in some other games.

There are two measures of success: the gold coins you accumulate by occupying space and eliminating other players, and your high score percentage, which shows how much of the board you’ve conquered in a session. The coins you can use for avatars and your high score are purely for bragging rights. You can also buy coin packs if you really want a new avatar quickly.

In-game advertising

There are a lot of ads, and they’re really detrimental to the overall flow of the game. I found that once I removed the ads via an in-app purchase (which also included a stack of coins), my overall performance started to improve considerably. Quickly jumping back in space means you could either attack someone who just overtook you (depending on where you spawn), or you could be in a better position for a more successful run.

Little Lag

Occasionally there’s a slight lag in responsiveness, which can be frustrating if it causes you to do something as silly as run into a wall. There also seems to be a proliferation of bots, which I suspect are bots due to their highly improbable travel patterns that trace a long zigzag. With the controls as they are, achieving multiple wide-ranging zigzags in very rapid succession seems possible only through programmatic means. The bots don’t particularly affect the gameplay, but it feels more fun to think I’m fighting other players for territory instead of bots.

Overall, Paper.io is fun, addictive, and definitely worth the free download, especially for .io fans. Those who may not have understood the appeal of these games will enjoy the simplicity that Paper.io brings to the genre, along with its vibrant and charming aesthetic.
