About REDCON MOD APK

Hexage has been a fixture in Android gaming since the beginning, with titles like Radiant and Buka. Hexage’s latest title is a strategic battle fortress builder called REDCON. It boasts great weapons, solid graphics, and in-app purchases designed by a sane human being. What more could you want?

REDCON follows the story of you, an attack commander in the service of the Empire State. The rebels are surprisingly well-equipped, but you have a customizable battle fortress. Each level consists of your weapons firing repeatedly while you designate targets within the enemy fortress. If you’ve played Canon Brawl on PC, this will look similar. As you destroy enemy installations, you gain experience that unlocks more fortress designs and weapons.

The game looks good with that familiar Hexage style and has (from my brief test) very enjoyable gameplay. You could say there are many other free-to-play games that are simply discouraged by in-app purchases, so what about REDCON? The system is similar to the developer’s last big release, Reaper. You can play the first 18 levels for free. After that, it’s $2.99 for the full game. You can also pay $4.99 or $5.99 if you want additional content like extra skins or weapons. There are no ongoing in-app purchases.

The general idea behind each REDCON scenario is to bombard the ever-loving junk of whatever is on the right side of the screen. This is where the first similarity to FTL comes into play, as you decide which areas you want to prioritize with your weapons.

Do you take out the weaker but faster bombing stations? The big, heavy ordnance? Perhaps you should focus on the rooms that provide light buffs as a faster payload? Whatever you decide, make sure you leave nothing but burning wreckage in your wake.

Command your soldiers

A second similarity comes from the soldiers you’ll have performing tasks in different areas of your base. They can be directed individually or in groups, and they’re important for things like repairing damaged weapons or providing passive bonuses. It can be a bit tricky trying to select one of these soldiers in the middle of a battle (and also designating targets or changing ammunition types), but the action can be paused by tapping the center of the screen, making it significantly easier. Once everything is paused, you can issue any commands you want.

Throughout the campaign—I’m not sure to what extent yet, as I haven’t found anything that specifically mentions what level I’m on—you’ll unlock the ability to customize your base, which is where the real fun begins. Here, you can use the money earned in previous levels to buy new weapons, quarters, and defenses to tailor everything to your own personal strategies. It adds a much-appreciated layer of depth, and it can be a real brain-teaser (in a good way) to decide whether or not to change your current loadout each time you unlock something new.

Base Adjustment

However, there are a couple of drawbacks to the base setup. First, REDCON MOD APK doesn’t spend much time explaining the important balancing act between ammo and power. There’s a brief mention of it during the tutorial stages, but it’s more of a passing comment than anything truly helpful. Every room you add to your base will require energy, and every weapon uses both energy and ammo. If you overdo it with too many items, or too many items that use a lot of resources, then your base’s performance will suffer. So be sure to pay attention to the stat readings at the bottom of the base screen, and look for the room/weapon requirements at the top of each description page.

Another issue I encountered was the lack of clarity in the default basic layout. It’s not something I would consider “unfair” to players who don’t want to pay to unlock the premium version (more basic layout options, access to levels beyond the first 18, and potentially more powerful rooms and weapons if you choose to pay for higher levels), but it does feel limited. I prefer the premium layouts that offer a few more room and weapon slots instead of the basic one that only covers the bare minimum.

It’s somewhat surprising how much my opinion has changed since the latest update removed the superhuman omniscience of enemy soldiers. REDCON MOD APK went from something I would have burned down if I had any physical presence to a game I’m actually looking forward to playing more. I would definitely recommend giving it a try. I’d even recommend spending (a bit of a pun, but not really) on the premium upgrade.
